SD: Local baseball players selected to all-state team

A host of local baseball players were selected to the 2017 Missouri Baseball Coaches Association All-State list.

Sikeston's Trey Smith, a senior, was named to the Class 4 second team as an outfielder after leading the Bulldogs with a .433 batting average, 22 RBIs, five home runs and 12 stolen bases.

New Madrid County Central senior Palmer Campbell was also a second team outfielder with a 462 average, 22 RBIs, nine doubles and one home run.

Portageville duo Ian Torrey and Nick Allred were selected in Class 3.

Torrey, a junior, was a first team outfielder with a .442 average, 34 RBIs, four home runs and 12 stolen bases. Allred, a senior, was chosen as an honorable mention infielder after posting a .440 average, 31 RBIs and three home runs.

In Class 1, Oran junior Drew Reischman was a first team infielder with a .540 average and 26 RBIs.

The three-time defending Class 1 state champion Bell City Cubs had five selections with seniors Austin Hicks, Cole Nichols and Bobby Wright as well as juniors Logan Yates and Chase Dembowski.

Final State Rankings
The Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association released its final state baseball rankings earlier this week and seven teams from southeast Missouri finished the season in the Top 10.

The Sikeston Bulldogs finished sixth in Class 4, while Portageville ended seventh in Class 3 and Poplar Bluff took 10th in Class 5.

Bell City, which won a state title for a third straight season, finished No. 1 in Class 1, while Cooter finished ninth.

St. Vincent finished fourth and South Pemiscot finished eighth in Class 2.
