He was born Feb. 2, 1945, in East Prairie, Missouri, to the late Welton Edward Scott and Ovella Mae Stokes Scott. He was a disabled veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Vietnam War. Donnie was a farmer much of his life, and during his retirement he enjoyed repairing appliances. I spent eight years in the military and assumed most military people and their supporters understood what a fake anti-military supporter Trump and his Republican mob was. When I went to a meeting where my ex-military buddies were, I was surprised at how few facts they really knew about Trump — that he made fun of Gold Star families, told his boys that only suckers went into the military which neither he nor any of them did, made fun of John McCain because he got wounded and captured, didn’t want crippled veterans at any of his parades or any of events because they gave him a bad picture, refused to visit the veterans’ graves in Europe and that soldiers who were killed in the war was losers. They had a different view of him when I was through giving the facts and asking them to please check the facts, and if they found that I was in error in anything, I’d buy them a steak dinner. No steaks have been claimed to date.

This past week I had food poisoning. I was really ill, and all I could really do was try to keep hydrated and suffer through it. I must admit that there was a time or two when I really “wanted my mommy.” Now, this desire for my mother’s comforting arms and care is something that can no longer be granted. Yet, deep down, I think we all from time to time long for this special kind of loving, healing presence in our lives that for many is now just a memory...
