I saw a short clip on YouTube where a high school football player sang the national anthem. The announcer introduced him and said: “Please remove your hats and raise your right hand to your heart.” You almost never see people removing their hat or raising their hand for the national anthem. Years ago, it was a common tradition and showed respect for our great country.

NMC R-1 School District boosts employee salaries

NEW MADRID, Mo. — Salaries will increase next year for New Madrid County R-1 employees. Following a work session at their April meeting to discuss preliminary budget figures for the 2023-2024 school year, the New Madrid County R-1 Board of Education approved an increase in the base salary. Base teacher salary will go to $38,000 from $36,000 which equates to a 5.56 percent increase for all employees...

NEW MADRID, Mo. - In a brief meeting April 24, the New Madrid City Council covered items from the top - the refurbishing of a city water tower - to the bottom - a sewer project. City Administrator Aaron Griffin advised the Council welding is complete on the city’s Mill Street water tower. He said he expects sandblasting to start soon, however for safety reasons the adjacent children’s park is closed and the skate park may be closed while overhead work is under way...
