SD ROUNDUP: Kelly soccer team gets first win, NMCC softball edges Senath in extras

BENTON, Mo. -- Marissa Jones netted three goals as the Kelly Hawks kicked off their season with a 7-1 victory over the Herrin, Ill., Tigers in the opening round of the Kelly Round-Robin Tournament.

Emily Bolen contributed two goals while Kaitlyn Johnson and Maegan Walker each had one goal for Kelly (1-0). Mallory Urhahn dished out two assists for the Hawks while Meghan Foley, Hailey Noon and Lynsey Powers provided one assist apiece.

Goalkeepers Breeana Maronay and Marissa Worth combined for six saves in the post.

Kelly resumes tournament action at 9 a.m. today against Murphysboro, Ill. The Red Devils blanked Affton 4-0 in Friday's other first-round game. The Hawks will square off against Murphysboro at 3:30 p.m. today.


NMCC 9, Senath-Hornersville 8

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Allyson Garner drove in the game-winning run for the Eagles on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the win over the Lions in both teams' spring-season debut.

Lily Johnson was the winning pitcher for New Madrid County Central (1-0). She threw a complete game and allowed eight unearned runs with four strikeouts and one walk.

Allyson James tallied two RBIs for the Eagles.

Emilee Newman suffered the loss in the circle. She pitched 8 1/3 innings and gave up nine runs (three earned) on 11 hits, walked six batters and had no strikeouts. She also doubled at the plate and batted in three runs to pace Senath-Hornersville (0-1).

NMCC returns to the field on Monday when the Eagles travel to Steele, Mo., to take on South Pemiscot. Senath-Hornersville hosts Gideon on Friday.
