SD ROUNDUP: Quick start pushes NMCC into tournament semis, Sikeston girls drop opener

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A quick start led the New Madrid County Central Eagles to a first round 63-47 win over Lake County, Tenn., during the 53rd Annual Southern Illinois Healthcare/Carbondale Holiday Tournament Tuesday morning in Carbondale, Ill.

Jaurous Haynes and Thailin Marsh each scored 13 points for the Eagles. Haynes shot 6 for 11 from the field and added five rebounds while Marsh went 4 for 5 from the floor.

Palmer Campbell added 11 for NMCC, who led 17-9 after the first quarter and 37-14 at the half.

Rodarius Cheirs scored 12 for Lake County (2-7). Jeremiah Polk had 11 and CJ Martin added 10.

The Eagles (7-3) will face Murphysboro Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., in the small school championship semifinals.

Lutheran-St. Charles 55. Sikeston 33

Earlier in the day, the defending tournament champion Sikeston Lady Bulldogs were defeated in the first round by Lutheran-St. Charles 55-33.

Sikeston entered the tournament as the fourth seed but struggled finding its offense against the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed 23-15 at the half but were out-scored 32-18 in the second half.

Sikeston was led by Kiera Steward with 11 points. Larysa McClellan added eight points.

The Lady Bulldogs will play at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning in the consolation semifinal against eighth-seeded St. Charles West.
