SD: District football roundup -- Charleston pulls off upset, Caruthersville and Hayti roll into next round

FESTUS, Mo. -- The Charleston Bluejays won their first district game since 2012, upsetting Jefferson 42-32 on the road Friday night.

Charleston quarterback Lee Thomas Moody threw four touchdown passes, including three in the first half to help the fifth-seeded Bluejays to a 36-20 lead over fourth-seeded Jefferson at the break.

Moody hit Derrick Evans for a 35-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Moody then hit Jeremy Tucker for a 74-yard touchdown and a 20-yard touchdown in the second quarter. The duo then hooked up again in the third quarter for an eight-yard score for the Bluejays only touchdown of the second half.

Charleston running back Q'naries Anderson had two touchdown runs in the first quarter, a 40-yard run and a 20-yard run as the Bluejays improved to 4-6 on the season.

Charleston will be on the road again Friday when they play top-seeded and state-ranked Malden at 7 p.m. Malden defeated Charleston 54-22 on Sept. 30.

Caruthersville 71, Kelly 0

CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- The Caruthersville Tigers had no trouble dispatching winless Kelly in their first round district matchup 71-0 Friday night.

The Tigers jumped on top of Kelly 50-0 in the first half and were never challenged.

Caruthersville quarterback Charles Golliday completed all five of his passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. George Qualls caught three passes for 163 yards and two scores while Lamonte Bell carried the ball five times for 55 yards and three scores. Deandre Davis gained 40 yards on four carries and two scores.

Kelly (0-10) was held to just 63 yards of total offense finishing with -19 rushing yards. Quarterback Christian Worley finished 10 of 27 for 82 yards with Evan Ebert catching six passes for 58 yards.

Caruthersville improved to 7-3 and will host East Prairie in a district semifinal game at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hayti 68, Crystal City 0

HAYTI, Mo. -- Quarterback Allen Mills threw for three scores and ran for two more during Hayti's home rout over Crystal City Friday during a Class 1, District 1 first round game at Hayti High School.

Mills completed 24 of 35 passes for 268 yards and ran three times for 84 yards. His favorite target was Dayon Moore who caught 10 passes for 141 yards and two scores.

Devante Robinson ran five times for 37 yards and two touchdowns while also scooping up a fumble and returning it 30 yards for another score.

Timothy Hamilton scored twice and ran eight times for 59 yards.

The Indians (9-1) scored 22 points the first quarter and tacked on another 30 in the second to lead 52-0 at halftime. Their defense limited seventh-seeded Crystal City (3-7) to 31 total yards.

No. 2 Hayti will now host third-seeded Scott City, who defeated No. 6 Chaffee 41-26, in a semifinal next Friday.

The Indians defeated the Rams (7-3) 48-28 during Week 7 of the regular season.
