(Local News ~ 09/07/03)
SIKESTON -- Wrestling isn't traditionally thought of as a family sport, but add four brothers, and quickly it becomes one. Just ask the Ruby family of Sikeston. From 1978-1990, brothers from oldest to youngest -- Terry, Bill, Dan and John -- started taking the high school wrestling circuit -- and the entire decade of the 1980s -- by storm. They won matches against wrestlers from small schools and wrestlers from the larger schools...

Mistakes doom Bulldogs
(High School Sports ~ 09/07/03)
SIKESTON - If Friday night's season opener against Jackson is any indication, the Sikeston Bulldogs' defense appears to be just as stout as ever. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the Bulldog offense, which sputtered for most of the night in a 12-7 loss to the Indians at SPS Stadium...

Tough first week for local teams
(High School Sports ~ 09/07/03)
It was a tough week for teams in our area. Every team that our newspaper covers suffered a Week 1 loss with the exception of Charleston, which beat Kennett 22-7, and Portageville, which was idle. Sikeston was dealt a 12-7 upset loss to Jackson, New Madrid County Central fell apart in the second half against Jonesboro to lose 26-7, East Prairie was outmatched by Hayti 41-0, and Dexter lost its quarterback on the opening possession which led to a 31-8 loss to Poplar Bluff...

Ghost in woods
(High School Sports ~ 09/07/03)
Become a ghost before and after you get to the woods. Out of all the methods this may be the best way to truly get close to deer. The methods that you can do starting a month before the season opens is to eliminate what the deer rely on most - smell. No detail is too small. I believe in cleaning out your vehicle of dirt and other scents to help cut down on the scent getting on you when you are getting in and out of your vehicle during the season...

Good government needs public input
(Column ~ 09/07/03)
You'd have to be a true political junkie to have any great interest in the brouhaha that has surrounded the Sikeston City Council's recent appointment to the Board of Municipal Utilities. As a past 8-year member of that Board, I probably follow the actions of the Board more than most. But this potentially embarrassing situation has the public examining the ways that appointments are made...

Speakout 9/7
(Opinion ~ 09/07/03)
In regards to some comments about "no man's land" of Parma, as a resident, yes, everything you commented on is very true. There is more wrong with this town of "no man's land" than drugs. Gambling machines are being played for cash by one employee of the business. Go in on Sundays and stand in line to be waited on because employees own the machine. Loan sharking is big there, also...
