The Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce organized the Second Annual Community-wide Cleanup Oct. 20. We took in 122 cleanup requests from the community and had 61 volunteers ranging in age from 10 to 65. Unfortunately, the cleanup requests were greater than the number of volunteers, therefore we did not get to finish all of the cleanup assignments...

RISCO - The state of Missouri has an offer for Risco's 392 residents. The Department of Natural Resources has agreed to pay 40 percent of the cost of needed repairs to the community's sewage system if the residents fund the remaining costs. On Tuesday, the voters in Risco will go to the polls to decide whether to issue revenue bonds of $320,000 to fund their portion of the improvements. ...

I was in Market Place shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. While shopping there, there was a real, real nice obviously Islamic woman. She was dressed in traditional attire and had two small children. She was very, very nice, very, very mannerly and I even spoke with one of her kids. ...

Here's something that's scary for Halloween. Why would Missouri Democrats oppose a plan to require Missouri voters to show a photo ID before voting? I certainly don't have an answer because it seems so simple to avoid voting fraud by requiring that voters simply show a photo ID. But during testimony over the plan last week, Missouri Democrats said they would probably oppose the plan during the upcoming session of the legislature...

JACKSON - Raymond Lee Rampley, 69, died Oct. 29, 2001, at his home. Born July 3, 1932, in Belly City, son of the late L.E. and Verbie Morris Rampley, he was a 1952 graduate of Bell City High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Korea from 1952-1954. ...

SIKESTON - Pallbearers at services conducted Tuesday at Ponder Funeral Home for Emanuel B. Woods, 82, of Memphis, Tenn., who died Oct. 26, 2001, were: Zachary Carey, Rodney Wilkerson, Gregory Paylor, Tommy Woods, Terry Woods and Albert Peters Jr.
